Reference note: Rufus is from the Remake timeline so the original continuity of the first game and after doesn't apply to him. Anything before the OG FF7, including Before Crisis/Crisis Core, will though as events/people from those two are referenced in the Remake.

❥ Personality: Rufus is a gray area. He's neither a good person, nor is he an evil person. He walks a fine line between being a man with some morals and yet being a cold and calculating villain as shown in his actions with AVALANCHE in BC and how he considers some of his father's actions to be overkill, or to be a violation of ethics, again seen in both BC and the Novellas.

In his youth, Rufus was more inclined to only care about his father and himself, but as he grew up without his mother, without friends beyond a scientifically bred hound, and without any affection shown to him by his father, the last played a large role in turning his father from being a parental figure that he cared for and trusted to a rival to surpass and eventually remove from his path to taking over the company.

Rufus' pride was such that he felt that he could run the company better than his father, but he was also overly sensitive enough to take suggestions that he isn't capable of surpassing his father in ability to lead or running the company as a great affront, no matter if the suggestion was meant to be insulting or merely that person's opinion. The fact that his father gave him the title of Vice-president, making him his second in command, but withheld any actual power the position might have given him also rankled the young man. He found himself promoted in name only, shipped off away from the only home he ever knew to watch over Junon and basically play figurehead for the company.

These experiences basically shaped Rufus into the machiavellian person seen in the beginning of Before Crisis, deciding to use another group to achieve what he can not personally get done. He doesn't care about the group's beliefs or aims, only what they can do for him. He shifted the blame of leaking info off onto another, using Veld as a scapegoat to hide his actions. When things don't go his way, or the group does something he did not agree to, then he became hostile toward them. It would appear that during this part of his life, all he cared for was his own desires and the company's continued well-being after a fashion.

It isn't until he's found out by his father and the Turks, and then betrayed that he seems to mature and outgrow the machiavellian traits displayed. It's possible that in the time spent with the Turks, Rufus finally gained a chance to see a group of people who actually cared about each others well-being and acted to help each other without ulterior motives.

It's possible that Rufus saw the value in this loyalty during his time there and how that loyalty could benefit the company. Which would be why Rufus acted to save the remainder of the Turks, and while it seemingly came at the high cost of two lives, both Rufus and Tseng were aware and accepted that there was no way to move forward in that plan except to make it appear to all that those two had been removed as threats toward the company and its secrets. Speaking of secrets, Rufus is very much someone that plays things close to his chest and only doles out small pieces of information as he feels necessary, he's not the type to layout an entire plan given a choice in the matter. Even if he is prodded to say more, it's very likely he will leave out elements either to keep an advantage or to spite the one forcing the information out of him.

He's also not used to people offering him genuine gratitude, as he tends to brush it off or deflect it. The one time that Tseng and the other two remaining Turks offered him their genuine thanks for saving their life and jobs, Rufus seems to deflect it by claiming he wasn't doing it for them, then continues on to state if they insist on expressing such gratitude, they can do so in their work.

Thus it can be said that while Rufus can act confident and charming when it comes to business, in his personal life, his social skills tend to be rather poor. He's never actually had actual human friends even as a grown man, the only people he's actually managed to get relatively 'close' to are the three Turks: Tseng, Reno and Rude. Yet, he's currently more their boss than an actual friend, even if they are the only people he grants any degree of trust to. He's not in the least afraid to speak his mind about how he feels on things, but he does know when to stay quiet and withhold his opinion.

Those outside that small group of Turks, Rufus will likely judge on a case by case basis on just how open or closed off he desires to be with them, though more often than not he'll hold anyone he doesn't know at a distance and while he will be the soul of civility, one would be wise not to expect any real warmth from the man as he will not publicly display any actual affection or any other emotion that he thinks can be used against him.

His sense of humor is admittedly a bit warped, occasionally dry and sarcastic. His quips and remarks to Cloud during their fight are an example of his humor. (and in the OG version of their meeting before their fight, he also quips that he surmises their fight 'means they won't be friends')

Most of the information on Rufus prior to Advent Children is revealed in Before Crisis and the Ultimania book. Unfortunately, in the Remake, Rufus isn't mentioned at all until he calls Tseng, and then it's just his title ("The VP needs us.") and then there's nothing until he actually arrives. Where Barret calls him the 'heir to the throne', and he and Cloud trade remarks ("You're a SOLDIER aren't you? That would mean I own you" "Ex-SOLDIER, I quit.").

Unlike the commentary that we got in the OG version of the game about how 'no one's seen him bleed or cry', followed up by the introductions of everyone and his little 'this is how I'm going to do things now' speech.

❥ Abilities:
-FIGHTING Rufus is a capable fighter as is shown during his showdown with Cloud. I suspect he's proficient in hand-to-hand combat in addition to the firearm tricks he has, though he's never actually shown fighting without his guns.

-- FIREARM TRICKS Rufus is capable of using his gun to move faster than one might expect, using the force of the shot and recoil momentum to his advantage. He's also capable of using coins in his attacks, either as a means to attack beyond simple gun fire or as a means to evade attacks or trap/stagger his opponent.
Examples of such coin attacks are:
--- Bright Lights: Throws 2 coins and shoots them, causing red lasers to fire at a target. Will also use as a counterattack
--- Think Fast: Tosses 5 coins into the air and shoots them, causing them to explode.
--- Tread Softly: Throws 3 coins to the ground that emit electricity for 8 seconds.
--- Up in Smoke: Tosses a coin in the air and shoots it, causing a cloud of smoke to appear. Target will also flinch.

-DUAL-WIELDING Rufus gun is a specialized weapon that looks akin to a shotgun, but can be split apart into two separate pistols, which he's fully capable of using to full effect. His attack Guns Akimbo shows this off.

-MAGIC While Rufus doesn't personally use materia himself, he is capable of making use of others using it in a tag team. His canine companion, Dark Nation uses Thunder at times which grants Rufus the opportunity to use Thunderclap (a charged lighting shot) on his opponent.

-TAG TEAM FIGHTING While Rufus will be without his canine companion, Dark Nation, I suspect Rufus can easily enough use his knowledge in combo tactics in fighting should he wish or need to if he finds a partner to fight alongside.

-HACKING/COMPUTER LITERATE He is implied to be rather good with computers during Before Crisis, though how much of that was his ability to hack his way into the system versus him simply using his clearance to obtain it isn't specified, regardless the fact he was capable of forcing his way into the Turks system to offer them the information he gained shows a level of skill beyond the norm.

Coupling all of the above with his obvious intelligence and survival skills, and it becomes apparent that despite being merely human, Rufus is by no means any kind of pushover or your weak average person.

PHYSICAL AFFECTION: People can try it, how it will be accepted will depend upon who they are, how he feels about them, and the type of affection they're trying to pull off. Hugs are more apt to be given a pass, than anyone trying anything remotely sexual.
PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: People can pick a fight, but should keep in mind that one) he's fully capable of defending himself be it hand to hand or firearms..and two) god help them if the Turks learn that they hurt him, or attempted to do so, and lastly three) Rufus does possess a guard hound called Dark Nation who is extremely protective of him and is not above pinning attackers and chomping their necks. In absence of the second or third point, the first still stands and he's not the sort to hold back in a fight.
